PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS:
From an Impressionist Point of View
with Dan Beck
‘An Impressionist approach to capturing light, color and atmosphere’
Join award-winning artist Dan Beck for an immersive five-day painting workshop at Casa Buena Art Retreat on Mexico’s beautiful Pacific coast. Using people, places and everyday objects as inspiration, Dan will share his impressionist approach to capturing light, color, atmosphere and the feeling of a subject.
The workshop will include demonstrations, individual instruction and group discussions, with opportunities to paint the figure from a live model, still life subjects and the colorful tropical surroundings of Casa Buena. A special plein air outing will allow students to experience and paint the natural beauty and local character of Mexico.
Dan encourages each artist to move beyond simply copying the subject and create paintings that feel personal, expressive and alive. The retreat is designed to offer serious instruction while still allowing time to enjoy the warmth, culture and relaxed atmosphere of coastal Mexico—a perfect creative escape.
As an option, you can stay for an extra 2 days: paint on your own or just relax, soak up the sunshine, visit San Blas or nearby villages.
Workshop Instructor: DAN BECK
Dan’s artistic journey began in the years of wanderlust following high school. He worked as a ranch hand in Arizona, in construction along the beaches of Florida, refinished furniture in Louisiana, and spent four years in the infantry, including two years in Germany. Wherever he went, Dan filled sketchbooks and journals for his own enjoyment.
After a couple of years of college in Colorado, he realized that what meant most to him were his sketchbooks. He quit his job and college, sold everything he had, and decided that committing to one path was what all his previous experiences had led him toward.
Using his G.I. Bill, Dan attended Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, followed by continued study at the Art Students League of Denver with many contemporary painters and the Impressionist masters.
Equally adept at figurative, still-life and landscape, Dan is an experimenter by nature, as well as being firmly rooted in the tradition of Impressionism. His love of nature and a deep respect for the tradition of art serve as both guide and inspiration to his goal of "making a contribution" to the world of painting.
Dan's paintings evoke a timelessness and dignity that are the underlying themes in whatever he paints. "Painting is a balancing act between opposite ideas - direct observation and instinct, control and spontaneity, even between the literal and the symbolic. It seems to me that although a painter is deeply involved with his own private investigation, his real aim is to communicate something to the viewer that resonates on a uniquely personal level."
Dan and his wife now live in Navarre, Florida, near his most favorite childhood home.

Art supplies for the workshop
Becoming a good painter doesn’t require a lot of talent just lots of practice and good equipment. If you want to cheap out on paint, brushes and other essentials because this is just a hobby and you’re not going to spend the money on the goods it takes to paint, I suggest you try macramé for a hobby. Cheap supplies will prevent you from achieving any sort of success and you will be frustrated. In the end will have wasted your money anyway. Sorry if that sounds harsh but over
the 25 years I have been teaching it’s the truth.
