Capturing Personality in Portrait

Jane Romanishko

There is nothing more challenging and fascinating in art than drawing a human face. It presents a double problem for the artist: rendering the exterior and capturing personality.

However challenging that might be, it is more simple if you KNOW HOW.

Step-by-step instructions will teach you the basics of portrait drawing and painting and get the mystery out of if.

What to expect:

We'll start with a simple generic portrait, learn the structure, and basic elements of a human head and the colour schemes for different ethnical groups.

Then we'll move onto the fun of painting a real person and capturing a personality: first from a photo, then from a live model!

Here are some other topics we'll cover in this very informative workshop

•  Composing your work is the most important and time consuming part of the whole process, we'll learn all about a good design of in portraiture.

• Shapes. Values. Colour Scheme. Texture. Edges. The Art of Knowing When it's Done.

•  Demos will be done in pastel and oil, but acrylic painters are welcome as well

•  Students will work from references, the instructor will help everyone individually

•  Critique of Students' work (optional)
