Intense Drawing
seeing with pencil
with Alexandra Rozenman
January 25 - February1, 2017

Join me for a journey through a complete spectrum of traditional and non-traditional rendering techniques, building and honing specific drawing skills that can be applied to a lasting personal drawing practice.

The week begins with rigorous exercises where we learn to see and think together, advances to drawing from life, moves on to perspective and the landscape, and finishes with individualized projects.

Through a variety of media and techniques, we focus on building a skill set from one exercise to the next. We emphasize the practice of observation, experimentation, mark making, and the ability to critically discuss the work that we create.

This workshop is a structured developmental introduction to the visual language. Concepts and skills are developed through sequential, observational and imaginative drawing. Using gesture drawing as a point of departure you will create images by interpreting what you see,

Feel, and remember. Your awareness of space, unity, variety, emphasis, contrast, balance, movement and rhythm will be heightened and internalized. You will also realize that you are drawing infinitely more than what you see.

Please bring to class an 18x24" pad of white 50 lb. drawing paper, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, pencil sharpener, scissors, glue, charcoal sticks, eraser, your curiosity and your willingness to take risks.

Cost: $1300.00 plus GST (5%) including Instructions, 7 days accommodation,
transportation from and to Puerto Vallarta airport, all delicious and nutritious meals,
entertainment and a field trips to the Jungle.

"My work expresses longing for understanding and being understood, for non-belonging and finding a place to be. Playfulness in my work points to instability of life – visually, culturally and literally. I am working playing on the conflicts between identity and assimilation, tradition and modernity.

Using recognizable sets from popular tales, places and paintings as my environments - I create a world of visual stories. I often am a non-fictional character in my work along with my fictional cast that I invent or find on my way. That creates a net of two-sided stories: my approach to being who I am in this world and my ways of telling this as a story.
Story, which communicates with art and history, illustrates psychology and challenges criticism."

Wonderful teacher, very encouraging, extremely helpful with ideas and with painting technique. Great studio environment to paint in. Classes small and lots of private instruction available from Alexandra. She is very creative and I have learned a great deal about painting.
Maren Anderson

Moscow-born, both classically and conceptually trained, Alexandra Rozenman brings a canny and charming mysticism to her life and art. Rozenman came to America from Moscow, Russia as a political refugee at the end of the eighties, when again through history the world was changing its shape and purpose. She creates her personal and often surreal world, where shapes, colors and images are often utilized like words in a story. Living in the Soviet Union Rozenman studied in Russia with today well-known dissident artists and was a part of Moscow alternative cultural scene of the 1980’s.
She holds Masters degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Beginning in 1989, her work has been represented nationally and internationally. In 2006 she was awarded a MacDowell Foundation Fellowship. She works in a wide range of schools, using art as a tool for personal growth.

What others say:

Alexandra is the perfect teacher/coach for an artist who wants a space to paint with as much or as little direction from the teacher as the moment requires. Alexandra provides excellent technical guidance in traditional painting methods; but more importantly for me, she is able to help me translate my ideas, using my personal visual language, onto the canvas. Her teaching method is rare, combining a deep understanding of her craft with an ability to perceive how best to assist a student in achieving their personal creative goals. I have been painting for many years and consider Alexandra's guidance to have played an important part in my artistic development.”
Helane Prottas

I have taken multiple group classes with Alexandra over a number of years, as well as participated in her weekly artist studios. She has been my inspiration & mentor guiding me to develop my painting insights/skills to be more aggressive with color & texture in my work. I have been delighted with my progress & credit much of it to her insights, enthusiasm & patience. She thinks outside-of-the-box, and this attribute helps her connect with her students' current state of art & move them forward to the next plateau. A very special person & wonderful teacher."
